How We Test

Refurbished devices sold by Zextons are inspected, tested, restored and graded before they are offered to a customer. This page describes that work, and the limit of what a written guide can claim.

Inspect, test, restore and grade

  1. 01

    Inspected

We examine the condition of every device, inside and out, before deciding what it needs.

  2. 02

    Tested

Each important function is tested carefully to identify faults, weaknesses, and hidden problems.

  3. 03

    Restored

Our technicians repair, clean, and prepare each device for dependable everyday use.

  4. 04

    Graded

The final condition is described honestly, so customers know exactly what they are buying.

The same process is described on Our Story.

What the checks cover

Refurbished phones go through the checks published in the grading guide, including its 70+ point inspection. The individual checks are listed there. They cover:

  • Battery and charging
  • Screen, touch and display
  • Cameras, Face ID and Touch ID
  • Speakers, microphones and haptics
  • Buttons, ports, SIM tray and headset plug
  • Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth and GPS
  • Sensors, including the accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • IMEI check and network unlock
  • Appearance and cleanliness

Cosmetic grades describe how a device looks. Battery health is the figure recorded at the time of inspection. A grade is not a claim that a device is factory sealed. Premium Grade, where it is offered, is described on the grading guide.

What an article review covers

A technical review of a guide checks the explanation in that revision: whether the steps suit the device being discussed, and whether a reader needs to know about differences between models, accessories or software versions.

That review does not mean every device mentioned in a news story or a specification comparison was tested by hand. When a comparison uses manufacturer information, the article says so. Where a problem needs a closer look than a written guide can give, the article should say when to contact a technician.

A desk-researched comparison is not presented as a hands-on test. A customer review is not a test of a device, and it is not proof of a contributor's work history. Read the editorial policy for how a review is approved and shown.
