Test 1 — Verify IMEI, Unlock Status & Legitimacy
The IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is the phone’s unique identity code. It reveals if the device is stolen, blacklisted, or carrier-locked.
Dial *#06# to display IMEI, or find it in Settings → About Phone.
Use UK services like CheckMEND or IMEI.info to confirm it’s clean.
Ensure it’s network unlocked so you can use it with any UK SIM.
For iPhones: Confirm Find My iPhone is turned off (no iCloud lock).
For Android: Check that Google FRP (Factory Reset Protection) has been removed.
Quick Checklist:
IMEI clean
No carrier lock
No iCloud/Google lock
Buying unlocked means your phone will work with EE, O2, Vodafone, or any UK network.
Test 2 — Inspect Physical Condition & Grading
Before diving into performance, do a thorough physical inspection.
Screen: Look for cracks, scratches, dead pixels, or discoloration.
Frame & buttons: Check for dents, bent edges, or loose buttons.
Ports: Inspect charging port, SIM tray, and headphone jack for dust/corrosion.
Camera lenses: Must be scratch-free and clear.
Water damage indicators (LDIs): Found inside SIM tray or ports — red means exposure.
Pro Tip: Use a flashlight to check port interiors for hidden corrosion.
At Zextons, every device is graded A, B, or C, so you know exactly what to expect. Unlike shady sellers, we provide real product photos and grading descriptions.
Test 3 — Check Display, Touch Sensitivity & True Tone
A faulty screen is one of the most common refurb issues.
Open different apps and scroll — the touchscreen should be responsive everywhere.
Check for ghost touches (screen responding on its own).
Run a dead pixel test (apps like Display Tester).
iPhones: Check True Tone / Night Shift under Display settings.
Android: Check refresh rate (90Hz/120Hz) for smooth scrolling.
A cheap LCD replacement may look dull compared to original OLED. Always test brightness at max and minimum levels.
Test 4 — Check Battery Health & Charging
Battery health is a make-or-break factor for refurbished phones.
iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Aim for 85%+ capacity.
Android: Use apps like AccuBattery or service codes.
Ask if the battery was replaced — and by whom.
Test charging: plug and wiggle cable slightly to check port stability.
Check fast charging and wireless charging if supported.
Many sellers cut corners by leaving old, degraded batteries.
At Zextons, batteries are replaced or certified to meet our minimum 85% health guarantee, backed by 18-month warranty.
Test 5 — Test Camera & Microphone Performance
Cameras are expensive to replace, so check both hardware and software.
Take photos in bright light, low light, and portrait mode.
Record video to check stabilisation and sound sync.
Test autofocus and flash.
Front camera: check clarity for video calls.
Microphone: record a voice memo and play it back.
Some poor-quality refurb jobs use non-original lenses, causing blur. Always compare with sample shots from the official model.
Test 6 — Inspect Ports, Speakers & Haptics
Small things like charging ports and speakers often fail first.
Test charging port with multiple cables.
Play music to check stereo speaker clarity.
Try earpiece speakers during calls.
Test haptics/vibration motor (weak vibrations = wear).
If the phone has headphone jack → test with wired headset.
At Zextons, ports and speakers are tested during our 30+ point inspection.
Test 7 — Check Connectivity: SIM, eSIM, 5G & Wi-Fi
Connectivity issues can make a phone useless.
Insert SIM → make a call, send SMS, use mobile data.
Test eSIM setup (important for UK carriers like EE, Vodafone, O2).
Confirm 4G/5G bands are UK-compatible.
Test Wi-Fi speed & stability.
Pair a Bluetooth device (earbuds, smartwatch).
Test hotspot tethering.
Many cheap imports don’t support full UK 5G bands. Zextons only sells UK-ready models.
Test 8 — Verify Buttons & Biometric Security
Physical buttons and biometrics affect daily usability.
Test power, volume, and mute switch.
Face ID/Touch ID: Register multiple attempts.
Fingerprint scanner (side or under-screen) → check speed & accuracy.
Test sensors: proximity, gyroscope, compass.
Test 9 — Storage & Performance Check
Don’t get tricked by fake storage or slow performance.
Go to Settings → Storage to confirm actual capacity.
Run benchmark apps (Geekbench, Phone Doctor Plus).
Open multiple apps simultaneously.
Play a video/game to test lag.
Perform reboot test → should restart quickly without freezing.
Test 10 — Factory Reset & Ownership Clearance
A phone should be factory reset and ownership-free.
iPhone: Ensure Find My iPhone is OFF.
Android: No Google account linked (FRP lock disabled).
The phone should open to the Welcome/Setup screen.
If a seller can’t provide this, walk away — it could be stolen or locked.
Bonus Check A — Software Support & Updates
Even a perfect phone is useless without software support.
Apple: iPhones typically get 5–6 years of updates.
Samsung: Up to 4–5 years on newer models.
Google Pixel: 3–5 years.
Avoid models near end-of-life unless used short-term.
Bonus Check B — Warranty, Returns & Consumer Rights (UK)
Keywords: refurbished phone warranty UK, refurbished phones with warranty UK, consumer rights refurbished phone
In the UK, refurbished phones should come with a minimum 12-month warranty.
These protections are far stronger than Amazon Renewed (12 months) or eBay sellers (30–90 days).
